About Recovery Weekend ~ September 14th, 15th and 16th, 2001

In September 2001, Recovery Weekend occurred in the immediate shadow of the terrorist attacks on September 11th.  Attendance at churches throughout the United States was higher then normal due to the events of the preceding week.

Thoughts and prayers of everyone centered on those suffering and anguishing from the direct and indirect effects of the disasters.  So many directly effected.  So many more feeling a less substantial, but just as real a sense of loss.

That year, Recovery Weekend took on a new perspective.   A central idea behind recovery weekend is "that Prayer Makes a Difference"....that Prayer gives us the courage to move from awareness to surrender and to keep moving towards healing, one step, one day at a time.   "Surrender" not to hopelessness, but to the Hope.   A Hope and Power that is greater than us and our situation, no matter what the cause -- terrorists from near or far away lands, or chemical addictions at our own hands.

Yes, Prayer can lead to recovery!

God's will be done -- this is an invocation of the outcome, not of a specific event!  We don't often understand His game plan, but He is the one who can create Glory from despair and Life from death -- rebuilding a life in turmoil or some buildings from rubble may not be a "piece of cake" for us, but in His hands we have a new perspective, and are confident in the possibilities!
